Webmail shows unread mail in two ways: always-on badges, and an optional desktop notification.
Every folder in the sidebar shows a count of unread messages next to its name, kept up to date as you read mail or new mail arrives - no setup needed.
Click "Enable new-mail notifications" in the sidebar to turn on desktop notifications for new mail, using your browser's notification permission. This is opt-in and never prompted automatically - nothing pops up until you explicitly turn it on.
Once enabled, webmail checks for new mail periodically while the tab is open, and shows a browser notification plus an updated count in the browser tab's title when new mail arrives.
This checks while your webmail tab is open, rather than a background push service - closing the tab or browser stops notifications until it's reopened.
